This is a simple and short blog post about an easy method of creating a bootable ESXi USB Stick with VMware Fusion on a Mac. It only takes some minutes to be completed.
If you need general information about VMware ESXi in VMware Fusion please refer to this VMware KB article Installing ESXi in VMware Fusion.
As a first step create a new virtual machine. Choose File > New… and then click on “Install from Disc or Image”.
Choose “Use another disc or disc image…” and browse to your VMware ESXi image.
The machine is started automatically. Choose the installer. ENTER.
Now switch to Settings > USB & Bluetooth and enable the USB Stick that you want to use. You cannot do this upfront because the VM needs to be running in order to assign a USB stick.
In the meantime the installer initializes.
Press ENTER to start the installation.
Accept the EULA with F11 and continue.
Now select the USB stick instead of the virtual HD attached to the VM. I only had a 8 GB stick left, a 1 GB stick is enough.
Press ENTER to confirm the Disk Selection…
…and choose the language you want to use. I will use “US Default” in this example.
Now you need to enter the password for the root user. It needs to be more than 7 digits long. Confirm the password and hit ENTER to continue.
Confirm the installation with F11.
After the successful installation you can eject the assigned ISO and the USB stick from the virtual machine. If you ever need to update the ESXi installation on the stick just insert the ISO with the update and the stick again and start the VM.

Let´s see how this works with the MacPro in one of the next blog posts.
